As a West Point grad I'm potentially a member of the establishment, but I detest falsehood and hypocrisy, and would be the perfect guy to have in a paralyzed two party Congress that continually fudges the truth and self-perpetuates by all manner of compromise and evasion. I plan to work ‘both sides of the aisle' in my status as an Independent member of the US Senate, and believe there's nowhere a Member will be able to run or hide (!) that I won't 'catch' him or her to invoke dialogue, whether its in the Senate Chamber, the cloak room, the dining room, or even the rest room!! (I generally try to avoid ladies rooms....) Congress's problem, as I see it, has been one of paralysis, made all the moreso by the election of the so-called 'Tea Party' members of the Republican caucus two years ago. I believe that many Tea Party members mean well in their goal of stopping all government spending that goes beyond balanced budgets, in addition to working to reduce our overall deficits. But politics and legislation is 'the art of compromise,' and Tea Partiers have, with their fanaticism, come close to destroying Congress's ability to get legislation done, not to mention having played a substantial role in the reduction of our country's top credit rating. I believe my background, experience, and strong motivation can make a major difference in seeing rational negotiations engaged and subsequent legislation moved forward, toward the prospects of again 'getting something done,' inclusive of beginning to get our national spending under control, our top credit rating restored, and our national debt reduced. Trying to do this 'all at once' would be destructive to our society, and we must take reasonably calculated steps in order to succeed. We didn't get in the horrible financial jam we're in overnight, and we won't get out of it overnight either. I have more 'stuff’ in my background than Carter (not Jimmy!) has Liver Pills. In addition to my time in the US Army, I've been an engineer working for Boeing, my father, and two Saudi American joint ventures. I've been a teacher, tech writer, editor, trainer, mechanical engineering designer, draftsman, and aviation maintenance instructor. I've been a ditch digger (for only one afternoon, I confess!), an unskilled laborer for a week, a kitchen cabinet maker for a period of time, and an electrical apprentice for 7 months. I've been certified in math, physics, chemistry and bible with a level K-12 Florida Temporaty Teaching Certificate. I've seen my fellow Americans rip off the Saudis for billions of dollars, to the best of my knowledge, regarding a project on which I, along with many others, was deliberately prohibited from working much, but was paid a large salary. I've met and communicated with many political figures, both here in the States and around the world, and had papers I've written in the National Security Council and State Department 6 times. In the instance of the 5th occasion, dated 24 November, 2006, I preceded the publishing of the Iraq Study Group (ISG) recommendations by 4-5 days, coming to the same major conclusions, else wise,'theirs with mine,' dependent upon your outlook!! In the instance of the 6th occasion, in a letter to President Bush dated 7 March, 2007, I preceeded Condoleeza Rice's commencement of negotiations with Iraq, Iran and Syria regarding Iraq, all the while advising Mr. Bush on 5 overall sets of negotiations he could pursue. Allowing for a subsequent note to me from General Petraeus (posted to this site), and Secretary of State Rice's subsequent negotiations, which are now a matter of history, I believe that my letter to Mr. Bush strongly demonstrated my capabilities in the realm of Middle Eastern foreign affairs I speak semi-fluent Russian and Spanish, more than a smattering of French, and a small amount of German. I strongly believe that the combined financial, environmental, health care and terror challenges we face are some of the most serious we and the rest of the world have ever known, and would look forward to your personal and financial support to help me get to the US Senate where I sincerely believe I can be of assistance in overcoming same, in the process thereof getting both our country and the rest of the world on a more sane and balanced track. We must now, in both Houses of Congress, 'stop tossing manure' and get on with open, honest dialogue that crosses all party lines as well as societal and income brackets. You can communicate with me through any of the means listed on my Contact Page. Bob Liebman for US Senate, 2012.
